The structure at a glance

Each section is split into two modules, and the second module adapts to how you did on the first. If you want the detail on that, see how the adaptive modules work.

The full timeline, module by module

Broken into the pieces you actually experience in order, test day looks like this:

An on-screen countdown runs for each module, and you can hide it if the clock distracts you; it reappears with a warning when five minutes remain. This structure follows College Board’s official breakdown of what’s on the test.

Reading and Writing

Short passages, one question each, covering four areas: Information and Ideas, Craft and Structure, Expression of Ideas, and Standard English Conventions (grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure). At roughly 71 seconds per question, pacing is real but manageable if you do not linger.

Math

Four areas: Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry. Most questions are multiple choice, with some student-produced response (“grid-in”) answers. A calculator is allowed for the whole section, and the Bluebook app includes a built-in Desmos graphing calculator. You get about 96 seconds per question.

The break

There is one scheduled 10-minute break, between the Reading and Writing section and the Math section. During it you can leave your seat, but you may not use your phone or any other device, and you cannot go back to the section you just finished. Use the time to stand, breathe, and eat something before Math.

Tools you get inside Bluebook

• Annotation: highlight text in a passage or question and attach a short note, useful for marking what a question is really asking.
• Mark for Review: flag any question and return to it later within the same module.
• Built-in Desmos calculator: a graphing calculator available for the entire Math section. You may also bring an approved handheld calculator as a backup.
• Math reference sheet: a built-in sheet of common formulas (areas, the Pythagorean theorem, and so on) is available throughout Math.
• Option to hide the timer: collapse the countdown when it is a distraction; it reappears near the end.

What to bring on test day

• A charged device that can run Bluebook (or a College Board loaner if you arranged one in advance), plus its charger.
• Your admission ticket and an acceptable photo ID.
• An acceptable calculator if you prefer your own, though the built-in Desmos covers the whole Math section.
• Pen or pencil for scratch work on the scratch paper the proctor provides.
• A snack and water for the break.

Install Bluebook and complete exam setup before test day so the app is ready and updated when you arrive.
